Having creative hobbies doesn’t need to be a childish thing; painting in your free time and indulging in other activities that you used to do as a child like dressing up in costumes for a party doesn’t need to be weird or nerdy or odd.
I think it is important to have creative hobbies. They help you unwind after a stressful day, they help you think in ways you probably wouldn’t have otherwise, and they can be such a great distraction.
So this is why in this post, you will find out how to make your creative hobbies ‘adult-friendly.’ It will provide you with a more mature, ‘adult’ twist to the childhood activities you had as a child.
Do you need a creative hobby?
Personally, I do believe everyone should have a creative hobby.
But I also do believe that what one person considers a creative hobby may not be considered the same by someone else.
Say if you’re not interested in the ‘typical’ creative stuff like art and DIY, but you love numbers and data, perhaps learning to code could be your creative hobby.
It doesn’t matter what it is so long as it is something that gives you excitement and acts as a nice break at the end of the day.
What are some creative hobby ideas?
1. Arts & Crafts
This is perhaps the most obvious activity when you think about creative hobbies to do at home, but it can be a great way to unwind at the end of the day.
If you’re already into doing art, why not try a course on Skillshare and figure out what type of art style suits you.
2. DIY hobbies
If you like creating things, try doing some DIY projects! There’s loads of great ideas on Pinterest and even on Instagram.
A lot of people have turned their DIY hobbies into businesses whether it be selling home-made candles, soap bars, resin moulds, perfumes, jewellery etc.
If you want to take your creative hobby a step further and make money off of it, definitely give it a try! There has been an increase in interest in buying products from small businesses. Who knows? Your small business may be the next one to take off!
3. Pottery
If you’re looking for easy creative hobbies to do, this website sends pottery kits straight to your home!
Enjoy a therapeutic evening making clay pots and cups with your friends while drinking nice mugs of hot tea.
4. Sewing/ knitting
Eventually you can try making your own clothes!
5. Do some scrapbooking
Take out some old magazines, print out some pictures, grab some gel pens and get cracking! This childhood activity can still be a great hobby for adults.
6. Learning about design/ interior design
This is definitely a creative hobby idea for adults. If you have a passion for design, learn about it and try getting directly involved with it by designing your own piece of clothing or decorating your nan’s sitting room.

7. Baking/ cooking
Everyone loves to eat, right? So start cooking the meals that you love and invite friends and family over and have a good night!
8. Writing
In your spare time, write about something interesting that happened throughout the day, or try some creative writing.
9. Poetry slam
If you like writing poetry, grab a few friends and do a poetry slam. This can be a really fun way to get creative with others and can even become a monthly thing!
If you’re just starting out in poetry, try doing these writing workshops by poet Rupi Kaur.
10. Try out new things
This is quite vague, but remember those times as a child when you’d get your mum’s make up and paint your face until you looked like a clown, or when you tied a blanket around your neck and suddenly felt like you were superman?
Similarly, experiment and try new things out. Try new looks, try going to places you wouldn’t have before, try new foods etc.
Your creative hobby could be something as simple as setting aside some time a week to do something new.
11. Recreate childhood activities
This is a hobby that you wouldn’t really do as frequently but nevertheless can be one.
Organise a sports day with activities you used to do in school and have a themed party where everyone needs to come in costumes.
Look back at some of your favourite childhood moments and recreate them – the nostalgia and the joy you had back then will come back!
12. Play your old childhood games/ activities
Take out your board games, do puzzles on a rainy day or colour in your colouring book, and play charades and Pictionary with your friends and family.
Take time to turn off your phone and be present.

13. Have designated fat days
This can be a hobby, of course it can, why can’t it be?
Obviouuusly, having a fat day every day wouldn’t be the best thing for your health but it will be the best thing for your heart…
I’m joking. Have designated days or meals where you can let go of any diet or anxiety over your health and EAT!
The main point of having these fat meals is to try new dishes out, so every once in a while, go out and try all the food places you wanted to try and don’t feel bad about it.
14. Watch old movies
Snuggle up with a bowl of popcorn and take a trip to the past by watching the movies you watched as a child.

16. Photography
Experiment with different tools to take great photos and learn how to edit them to get the effects you want. Why not try entering some competitions too?
17. Watch some old home videos
And start making them again! With social media, we now usually just snap a moment and move on. But don’t you just love the home videos where you’re being authentic and you can see life as it actually was before?
For extra nostalgic purposes, buy a camcorder to make your home videos.
