Especially during now, it has become extremely common to be spending the majority of your time at home. So, you may be looking for productive things to do at home when you’re bored (which may pretty much be all the time).
But staying at home doesn’t need to mean you have to be sluggish and not get anything done. You can also use this time to enjoy yourself and work on yourself too!
If you find it really hard to get productive this 5 minute productivity hack post will be really useful for you; it will show you how to stop procrastination and get things done.
If your levels of productivity are good at home, then that means you have learnt to discipline yourself and will, as a result, have productive work days too.
And let’s face it, if you’re able to be productive at home (with all of its lovely distractions like netflix, your bed and netflix and your bed – yes, I meant to say that twice), then that means you can be productive anywhere!
If building a productive system in your life is important to you, then you should understand that doing self-care activities will overall boost your productivity levels.
Setting aside time to do things that you enjoy will avoid burnout because at the end of the day, we’re not robots. We haven’t been programmed to work constantly.
This post will give you some inspiration for things to do at home when you’re bored to not only kill time but to also have a productive day.
If you’re still not convinced, just try out these activities – it’s better than wasting time staring into space!
Creative Things to do At Home When Bored
1. Get messy with arts & crafts
Arts and crafts is not just a childhood thing guys, it is a fun and productive thing to do when bored at home, and can be enjoyed by any age group.
Do some sketching, painting, colouring or even spend an evening with your favourite snack and some candles on, and create a vision board by cutting up your old magazines.
If that’s too old-fashioned for you, you can create a vision board online in a Pinterest board.
If you want to bring it up a notch, why not actually complete a course on something art-related. There are loads of creative courses on Skillshare as well as many other interesting courses for you to try.
This will increase your productivity because chances are you haven’t done this in a while. Engaging yourself in a way you haven’t before can prove to be refreshing and inspire you to try other things.
2. Do some creative writing to refresh your mind and increase productivity
You don’t need to be a Shakespeare to write; you can write solely for yourself if you want to.
This is a great productive thing to do in your free time at home because again, it challenges you to do something that you may not have done before.
And if you’re reading this and thinking ‘this is so not me,’ that’s fine, I understand, but still try it.
Spend time trying new things because that’s what makes life exciting. Also, opening yourself to different forms of learning will help your productivity.
If you realise it’s just not for you after trying it a few times, then by all means stop.
Some quick writing activities you can try if you’re having trouble finding something to write about:
- Write in the style of your favourite author. Try in different styles if possible.
- Try an online writing/poetry class. Rupi Kaur, creator of Milk and Honey, The Sun and her Flowers and Home Body, has done a few writing workshops on her Instagram account.
- Write about a childhood dream you had.
3. Start a business (this will boost your productivity like crazy)!
People are using the time they are spending at home efficiently to create a business about something they love.
Some examples are events businesses, digital illustration businesses, jewellery businesses, online service-based businesses and so much more!
This is a great idea for productive things to do at home when you’re bored as it will keep you very busy.
If there’s something you’re interested and which you think other people would like, try thinking about it seriously and making it into something that makes you money.
In the age of Instagram and tiktok, small independent businesses are flourishing.

Starting a business will greatly impact your productivity levels and may even help you make money and change your life!
Productive things to do when bored online
1. Quizzes to kill time and get to know yourself
Social media isn’t the only way to enjoy yourself online, quizzes (no matter how nerdy they sound) are actually really fun too, and is another productive thing to do when bored at home.
There are a huge variety of quizzes online; one of my favourites include the Myers & Briggs test which generates a four letter personality code for you after you answer all the questions.
You can then find your ideal career, what type of person you are and even what the personality type of your future partner is through this four letter code!
2. Online reading
You don’t need to have a paid subscription in order to find free books online to read. Gutenberg.org is a fantastic place to find classic books to read for free. There also loads of free online reading book apps with hundreds of books for you to read!
Although the benefits of reading will boost productivity for you in so many ways, you can make it even more fun by creating your own online book club.
Find some peers who are as interested in reading as you are and set a book to read together. Then, either through a zoom call, FaceTime or any other video calling app hop on a call together and discuss the book.
This is the perfect productive thing to do in the weekend, especially if you are stuck at home, as it makes you engage in conversations you wouldn’t have on a day to day.
I’ve written a post called Best Books To Read To Increase Your Knowledge About The World! It goes through a range of books which will guarantee loads of conversation topics and discussions.
3. Do some personal research
Yes, personal research.
Are there some areas is your life that need improvement or which you haven’t given attention to?
Either start working on it, or start researching to improve areas of your life that you are not knowledgeable in.
Some examples could be personal finance or even a recent skin issue that you are dealing with which you never had before.
Spend time to do both things that you enjoy and things that will increase your knowledge. These are both productive and efficient ways to have productive days and meet goals.
Organisation Activities That will boost Productivity
1. Deal with that pile of mess
Cleaning is one of the most productive things to do when bored at home. The idea of it does sound long, tedious and tiring when you think about it.
But as you do it and once you’re finished cleaning you will feel energised, more organised and more productive.
Tidy home, tidy mind as they say!
2. Organise your life
This sounds like a very general task but it is in fact, one of the longest tasks you will ever do but will bring the most productivity in your life.
Make sure to read The Ultimate ‘Mind Glow-up’ Series (Part 1) – SELF LOVE or The Ultimate ‘Mind Glow-Up’ Series Part 2 – SELF DEVELOPMENT to not only enhance this process of productivity but also self-growth.
Break this very general task down into several chunks (basically the important areas you consider in your life right now).
Let’s take these 4 areas as an example:
Health
Style
Beauty
Knowledge
As you can see, these chunks can be very broad (I.e. health) or more specific (like beauty).
With these in mind, devote time on researching and trying new things. Experiment until you find the certain style that you are comfortable with or are satisfied with how much knowledge you have gained about a topic (as per the example above).
The reason why this will be the longest and most productive task is because first, it is very dependent on the time (you may care about your style now, but later want to focus on something else).
Secondly, working on yourself will bring you the most inner peace and it will boost your productivity levels as you figure out more of yourself.
3. Create lists to be more efficient and productive!
Is there a movie or Netflix show you really wanted to watch but you forgot the name of it?
If you find yourself forgetting things quickly, start creating some lists.
These can range from movie lists, books lists, bucket lists, restaurant lists, self-care activity lists etc.
This is one of the easiest productive things to do when you’re bored at home. It will bring a sense of satisfaction in your life as you start checking things off.
These are just a few productive things to do on the weekend or even general productive things to do in your free time at home.
Productivity doesn’t need to just be based on the quality of your work but should improve the overall quality of your life.
