Sometimes having a schedule, routine or having goals just doesn’t cut it when you want to get things done. Because with all these things, you must first have the motivation to complete them, and then secondly believe that you are capable enough to follow through.
And it is with this second point where positive affirmations can make a great impact.

In this post, we’ll be taking a new approach to positive affirmations and I will help you create your own ‘tailored set’ of affirmations (so professional right? lol) to say that will personally help you and make you feel capable and confident in life.
First, what are positive affirmations?
Positive affirmations are a set of statements you repeat to help you overcome negative and debilitating beliefs about yourself. It can help with improving self esteem, confidence and your overall mental health.
Examples of positive affirmations can be repeating, ‘I am confident,’ or ‘I have the power to accomplish my tasks today.’
But, let’s be real. Repeating these statements to yourself can be slightly awkward/ cringey. But for many people it really does work and if you keep up with it, it can actually help you internalise these statements.
First of all, I would suggest for you to do this with the door closed and while your alone in the room. It’ll prevent you from feeling embarrassed and will ensure that you focus solely on those words.
Now, that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s begin in creating your own set of positive affirmations to say in the morning to elevate your day!

Mind map time: List down the areas of your life you want to improve
Create a mind map or list of characteristics or qualities of yourself you want to better for example, your self-image or ending your overthinking habits.
Do a brain dump and write without thinking too much about what you’re putting on the paper. Through this exercise, you may even find negative beliefs about yourself that you didn’t know you had.
Next to those negative qualities, write down a positive affirmation.
Here are some examples:
Can’t talk in front of new people (I speak with confidence, and what I say matters)
Fear of not being able to complete goals (Working hard will give me success)
I have regrets from my past that I can’t move on from (I am at peace with my past)
Make sure you write your positive affirmations in the present tense. Writing in the past tense or future tense somehow creates a barrier between you and that information, whereas in the present tense, it feels more current and will overall help you internalise the qualities better.
Once you have done this with all the negative qualities, write it down in a neat list in a place you can easily get to like your phone or notebook.

Find a suitable time when you can repeat your positive affirmations
I would personally suggest for you to say your positive affirmations in the morning because it is the time when you have just woken up, and aren’t yet affected by the events of the day.
This will be the part of the day when your mind feels the clearest, so saying positive affirmations to yourself before the hustle and bustle of the day begins will set you up for it and hopefully, improve how you work throughout the day.
Some people also like to say their affirmations just before bed. Perhaps, repeating your affirmations at the beginning and end of the day could be even more effective.
Experiment with different timings and figure out what’s best for you! But make sure, whatever the time you say your affirmation, say it with feeling. Really think about what you’re saying as you’re saying it.
So there you have it! Your own list of positive affirmations.
At the beginning of this post, I said that positive affirmations can have an impact on you that your schedule or routine may not have. It’s because schedules organise your day but positive affirmations make you feel capable of completing that day.
What I do want to emphasize before you finish reading this is that really believe in what you are saying. Don’t create affirmations that you know you don’t believe in because it can actually be harmful and detrimental to your mental health.
Take baby steps and congratulate yourself for all the things you are able to achieve every day before actually pushing to strive for other things.
Remember that you are in control of every thing you do, and actively take time out to do things that make you feel mentally happier and stronger.
